The 2025 Malawi Mining Investment Forum presented delegates with a wealth of opportunities in the mining sector for both local and international investors. This event highlighted the government's commitment to transforming the sector.
With potential to double the country's exports in a few years when existing projects are finished, it was shared that the country has much more resources that call for more investors.
Ministry of Mining challenged delegates that the ground investment environment is being cleared as it aims to create a vibrant mining sector that does not only produce raw minerals but also processes the minerals for more benefits.
Closing the two-day event, Minister of Mining, Ken Zikhale Ng'oma said the event left the Ministry better informed on policy gaps and locally available skills.
He also emphasized the need to ensure inclusivity, targeting the youth and women for shared benefits of the national resources.
"We have to make sure that women and the youth are not left behind as we foster the development of the sector. As we have learned at the forum, they have skills and some are already involved in the sector," the Minister said during the interview after the forum.
Chief Operating Officer of Nico Group, Kwanele Ngwenya, whose company was a platinum sponsor, stressed his company's commitment to partnering with the government and other players to provide solutions that transform the sector.
"Sponsoring this event is a belief in the sector which provides huge opportunities and we want to be involved as a group of companies with diverse solutions that are key to the sector," he shared.
The closing day had extensive discussions and presentations that provided insights into areas like tackling illegal mining, responsible mining, health issues arising from extraction, incentives in mining and gender inclusivity in mining development.
On policy front, the Minister of Mining disclosed that the government was working on legislation on critical minerals to ensure protection and strategic management of these resources while working on overall policy and frameworks to ensure fair Mining Development Agreements (MDAs).
Ministry of Industry and Trade, on its part, assured that although mining is not a priority sector by legislation, the sector still enjoys the benefits which include fiscal incentives through negotiations and other provisions.
Deputy Director of Trade Diamond Chikhasu said work is already under to formalize the sector to be on the list of priority sectors.
Young entrepreneurs and those trained in geology and mining could not let an opportunity pass but to showcase their potential.
Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Drone Link Rachel Kaunda shared how her company was already providing technical services through drones, citing her company's involvement in a land survey at a proposed mining site in Balaka.
